I'll have to try very hard to make this as brief as I can without making it incomprehensible.
Say for example Thor is there in the background and the natural processes of thunder are the method he uses to cause thunder. How would we ever be able to tell the difference? We can't detect Thor himself with science since we can only see his method or natural processes.

The best way I can explain is to ask you to imagine nature or this world a machinery with millions and billions of processes. Example:
When you put a seed in the soil. It grows, matures, flowers and bears fruit. This is a process.
The currents of air and water that repeat periodically.
The mountains, streams, brooks and meadows.
All of these things we observe and call 'nature' are works. They are the activity of the elemental folk, through who's work this Earth was formed and prepared for we human spirits.
When it is said that God Created everything, you must not imagine the Almighty ruler of all the worlds doing this and doing that, no. I will speak about this Earth: it was built through the help of millions of elemental beings (big and small). These beings came into being through the Power of God, and it is this Power that sustains them and enables them to work and exist. So behind this physically visible world, lies an army of entities of the most diverse kind, working, weaving, shaping, forming etc. Nothing just 'happens'.
They form and care for the smallest things from flowers, plants and trees to the most gigantic suns and planets. I explained that in the very early days when men first set foot on earth, their senses and receptive faculties were still able to see and communicate with them. Hence why most of the ancient cultures had oral history, carvings and sculptures of what they perceived.
You seem to be saying people can observe Thor himself. Are you proposing some form of perception (extra sensory or something like this)?
It isn't extra sensory if you understand it right. Think of the fact that everything has a very tangible form. This physical body is a tangible form composed of the substance we know as matter. When we talk of the soul or spirit or the actual man that uses this body and lives on after the latter expires, it also has a tangible form made of a very different substance. The reality is this inner core of man, the real man, is under very many cloaks (like an onion), each of these cloaks is a body made of substance from a very particular part of the cosmos through which he had to travel to get to this material earth before finally taking on the material cloak.
I hope the above makes sense? The fundament, that is, the actual man is from a spiritual realm or paradise. He came to this Earth for a very definite reason (otherwise he shouldn't / needn't be here). The transition from his origin to this Earth traverses many different worlds or plains of existence. Through each one, he acquires a cloak or body. On Earth, the material cloak, which is the outermost cloak, is active. It is needed to interact with material things. Without it, man cannot live, work and experience on Earth.
Just as the physical body has sensory organs, so also do the other bodies. The laws are uniform but the manifestation of the law varies with the substance. That is, they manifest on Earth based on the nature of matter. They also manifest in the beyond based on that particular substance. The Elemental beings have as their outermost cloak a substance type of matter that is different from the one we have. However, since we possess both, it is possible for us to use the senses of this other body to perceive them. The ability to do this is predicated on the health of this body.
What is the purity involved with having the capacity to observe these unseen influences? Why have people lost this ability?
These are all very deep deep questions that will lead to misinformation if I delve any further. But the best analogy i can give is what we can equally observe here. We know that if a person were to fall into a comma or deep sleep, the muscles and organs of the physical body go through an atrophic process. It needn't be a coma though, the underlying cause is inactivity. If a person were to force immobility or inactivity in some part of the body, that part will quickly begin to decay.
This is actually a law of movement. It is what drives creation. There must be movement. If the movement isn't positive or upward or furthering, then decay must follow, which is movement in the wrong direction but movement nonetheless. Nothing can standstill because it is a law of the universe.
Like I said earlier, the laws are uniform everywhere except for differences in manifestation based on the nature of the substance, which forms that part of the cosmos. Something very significant happened at some point in the development of man. It is vaguely, very vaguely alluded to in the bible. I needn't go into the details here. But it led men on a path of vanity: the woman exercising the effect of her physical body as charms to entice man, and the man in responding seeking material possession and power to attract the woman to himself.
The end result of such one-sidedness was that man's ability to comprehend what was Earthly grew fabulously. But because he focused solely on this, the physical parts of the body engaged in this activity grew stronger. And as with every one-sidedness, the part that was neglected grew weaker until it became completely unusable. This latter part is man's intuitive faculty, which organs engaged are what is known as the back-brain. Which, in comparison with the frontal-brain today, looks like a shriveled peanut. But it interestingly is a replica of the frontal brain with all of the anatomical features except on a much smaller and less active scale.
This is the oft misconstrued original sin or more precisely, inherited sin. Because it is inherited. Once men had disobeyed the natural balance prescribed by creation in his one-sided pursuits, the effect took its toll gradually, one generation after the other. Now every man / woman is born with this malformed brain. Over time, what was once common knowledge became myth and legend. Moreso because the Earthbound brain is incapable of comprehending anything beyond the concepts of Earthly time and space. Those who held on to tradition did so out of faith or some subconscious longing that they themselves could not understand.
So it does in some way allude to purity, but not in the way you think. According to prophecies, there will be a special increased power capable of reversing this brain development so that we will begin to see very different and more intuitive human beings. Then the time will come when people will be able to perceive beyond what is material. At that time, there will no longer be a place for the materialist on Earth.
